Practical Trim Instruction for Professional Students

Prerequisite: Enrollment in / completion of "Hoof Care Theory" -
Module 1 - 3

On a broader perspective, the Equine Hoofcare Professional functions as an advisor and the source of information for those seeking a holistic natural approach to their horses' health.

The Hoof Care Professional course requires serious studying and commitment. In order to learn how to trim a healthy hoof and  all the different pathologies, practical education and application are necessary. We offer practical instruction in Washington State (Port Angeles), Minnesota (outside Minneapolis), South Carolina (Columbia) and Australia (outside Melbourne).

In this course, students will receive a basic introduction to the anatomy and histology of the Locomotor apparatus of the horse in order to understand what aids and what prevents healing.  They will be given the information to recognize the correlation between conformation, movement and hoof form.  They will learn to recognize changes in bone alignment, contraction and other common hoof problems, to identify their causes and consequences and to understand the various methods for rehabilitation.

Mentor days consist of about 2 1/2 hours of theory every day, about 3 hours of trimming, 1/2 hour of answer and question time, 6 hours in all.  There will be no more than 4 students in every session. Your instructor may set up trimming on bio-specimen or on live hooves.

Further instruction will  be set up in the same fashion. You may sign up for additional mentor days if you feel you need to review some of your skills or have some of your special questions answered.

Mentors can be changed during the course. Depending on your location and your ability to travel, we may be able to assign you to several mentors, which will expose you to many different horses and scenarios, a great learning experience.

Mentor days are sold as single days. You must pre-pay as many days as you plan to sign up for.
